Finding Peace Amid Election Season: Five Practices to Release Stress and Embrace Unity

With the election season in full swing, things are intense—my family is going in every direction with their own views, opinions, and concerns. It's like a whirlwind of perspectives and emotions! While I see each person’s view, I’m focusing more on the big picture and what truly matters to us all. At the core, we all want peace, safety, and a hopeful future for our communities and loved ones. In these times, I find it’s essential to remember our shared humanity and shift our focus back to what unites us.

Here are a few gentle ways I find helpful to let go of stress and refocus my energy. I hope they bring calm, clarity, and connection to you, too, as we navigate this season together:

1. Ground Yourself in Earth’s Energy

- When things feel hectic, I like to sit quietly, close my eyes, and feel the earth beneath me. I imagine roots extending from my body, connecting me deep into the earth like the roots of an ancient tree. With each breath, I inhale peace and exhale tension, letting go. This grounding exercise is a powerful reminder that I’m held and supported by something greater than the day’s worries.

2. Calm the Mind with 4-7-8 Breathing

- For those moments when emotions run high, I use the 4-7-8 breath. Inhale deeply for 4 counts, hold for 7, and release for 8. This simple breathing technique is so calming for my nervous system. Whenever I feel overwhelmed by all the conversations swirling around, I repeat this cycle a few times, and it brings me right back to the present moment.

3. Find Peace with a Daily Gratitude Practice

- Before bed, I take a few moments to reflect on three things—however small—that brought me joy or comfort today. Maybe it’s a laugh I shared with someone or a moment of quiet. This practice opens my heart and reminds me of the abundance in life. Honoring what nurtures me shifts my perspective to one that’s rooted in peace, even amidst the chaos.

4. Expand Compassion with Loving-Kindness Meditation

- When things feel tense, I like to hold someone in mind who might be feeling the weight of these times too. I silently offer them thoughts like, “May you find peace. May you be free from worry. May you feel loved.” Holding others in compassion eases my own heart and reminds me we’re all in this together, even with our differences.

5. Soothe the Mind with a Mantra of Surrender

- I find so much comfort in a mantra like “I release what I cannot control” or “I trust in life’s unfolding.” In times of worry, repeating a mantra helps shift my energy from stress to trust, letting go and embracing peace in the flow of life. This practice grounds me in the bigger picture, where I can surrender to what I cannot change.

Each of these practices has brought me back to my heart’s center, where peace and clarity reside. While we can’t control the world around us, we can still hold a vision of unity, compassion, and balance. May this journey help you reconnect to what truly matters and bring us all closer to the peace we all desire.
